In my December 2023 post, I hinted at an exciting new choral collaboration. It is now finally time to reveal our secret! When we decided to set our 2024 Advent Calendar in Paris, we also decided that we wanted a proper French choir to sing some proper French carols for us. So, wanting only the very best, we started our search at the top with an email to the Maîtrise Notre-Dame de Paris – the choir school for Notre-Dame Cathedral – to see if they would allow us to record their children’s choir. To our delight, the answer was “oui”!
Unfortunately, following the heartbreaking fire that devasted Notre-Dame Cathedral in April 2019, we were unable to use the legendary building itself for our recordings. And so, on a clear and chilly January evening, we found ourselves in Saint-Germain l’Auxerrois: a gorgeous church situated behind the Louvre, just over the Seine from Notre-Dame. During the Revolution, Saint-Germain l’Auxerrois was used as a barn storing animal feed, a printing shop and a gunpowder factory, its bell “Marie” was used to signal the start of the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, and it has nearly been demolished – twice!
