Janice: Claire and Mia, I am sincerely honored to have a chance to talk with you and share your story with our readers. Come Back is a book that I will never forget and you did an incredible job drawing us into your story.
You are both gifted writers. Claire, can you tell us a bit about your background and where you are working today? Mia, you recently graduated from a major university. Where are you working now?
Claire: Thank you for your compliments on the book. We feel honored to be here. I was a professional screenwriter for many years. Come Back is my first book. I’m currently working on a proposal for a short, humorous book that offers ways to enhance your life.
I’m also creating, with Mia, mother/daughter retreats for that will give moms and adult daughters a week of pampering together that will include ways they can take their relationship to the next level. Women shouldn’t have to go “through he

In my talk, I am going to discuss an artist called Claire Fontaine [fig.]. Hal Foster imagined Claire Fontaine looked a bit like the girl in Jorn’s The Avant-garde Does Not Give up. But in her only known self-portrait, Claire Fontaine depicted herself as a teenager advertising an enigmatic product that is about the size of a folded A4 sheet of paper. So, who is Claire Fontaine? Claire Fontaine is a popular brand of stationary products, but in the name was appropriated by Fulvia Carnevale and James Thornhill in order to define what they call a “collective artist”. They created Claire Fontaine in Paris, but the word “created” is slightly misleading. Carnevale and Thornhill do not present themselves as the members of a collective called Claire Fontaine. Rather, they claim to be Claire Fontaine’s assistants. Before examining the conceptual background behind this choice, and to clarify terms such as “assistant” and “collective artist”, I want to briefly discuss the issue of authorship in the history of art and mainstream culture.
