Jack Thomas Andraka (born January 8, ) is an American who, as a high school student, won the Gordon E. Moore Award at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair with a method to possibly detect the early stages of pancreatic and other cancers. In , as a junior majoring in anthropology and in electrical engineering at Stanford University, he was awarded the Truman Scholarship for his graduate studies.[1]
Pancreatic cancer sensor
[edit]Andraka's winning project consisted of a sensor, similar to diabetic test strips, for early-stage pancreatic cancer screening. The sensor, consisting of filter paper coated with single-walled carbon nanotubes and antibodies against human mesothelin, was said to measure the level of mesothelin to test for the presence of cancer in a patient.[2]
The project claimed that tests on human blood serum showed a dose-dependent response, and that his method was times faster, 1&#; times as expensive, and times more sensitive than ELISA, 25% to 50% more accurate than the CA test,[3] and over 90 percent accurate in detecting the presence of mesothelin.[4] However, several years of trials would be needed to determine whether the new devi

Science speaker Jack Andraka was only 15 when he came up with a cheap method for detecting ovarian, pancreatic, and lung cancers in their earliest stages. While still in the ninth year of school education, one of Jack&#;s close family friends died from pancreatic cancer. This motivated Jack to create a more effective early detection diagnostic test for cancer. He realized that the lack of a quick and cheap early screening method for pancreatic cancer contributed to the low survival rate among those diagnosed with the disease.
Jack&#;s incredible discoveries led him to receive worldwide recognition. In fact, he won the Jefferson Award in , one of the most prestigious public service awards in the US. That same year, speaker Jack Andraka won the Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge. In addition, he has won several grants and awards, including the National Geographic Explorer grant.
In , Michelle Obama invited Andraka to the State of the Union Address. Jack is a STEM education reform advocate who speaks to audiences worldwide about his research and personal story.
