    Artrice Valentine Bader (1935-2024)

    Artrice Valentine Bader of Cary, North Carolina, a pioneering woman in science who was the first person to earn a Doctorate in Biology from Georgetown University and an early expert in electron microscopy at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), passed away from heart failure on Saturday, September 21 at the age of 88.

    Artrice was born in 1935 in Hampton, Virginia to parents Lee A. Valentine and Gladys Walker Valentine. Growing up with her sister Ellen in a proud black family that valued education and civil rights, she studied hard, skipped two grades and began college at the age of 15.

    Artrice graduated from Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) while still a teenager, and went on to earn a Master of Science degree at George Washington University before graduating from Georgetown with her Ph.D. in 1966. From there, she went on to have an honored 32-year career at the NIH working on advancements in genetics, cellular biology and virology.

    In 1967, Artrice met the love of her life, John P. Bader, a revered NIH scientist who was a pioneer in tumor virology discoveries, during scientific meetings in Edmonton, Alberta – their Paris in Canada. They continued their courtship when they both returned to their homes in Washington D.C.
