Sontag - Her Life
The definitive portrait of one of the twentieth centurys most towering figures: her writing and her radical thought, her public activism and her private face
Susan Sontags brilliant mind, her political activism and striking image made her an emblem of the seductions and the dangers of the twentieth-century world.
Her writing on art and politics, feminism and homosexuality, celebrity and style, medicine and drugs, Fascism and Freudianism, Communism and Americanism, reflected the conflicted meanings of a most conflicted word: modernity. She was there when the Cuban Revolution began and the Berlin Wall came down, in Vietnam under American bombardment, in wartime Israel. Sontag tells these stories and examines the work upon which her reputation was based, exploring the private woman hidden behind the formidable public face.
Drawing on hundreds of interviews conducted from Maui to Stockholm and from Manhattan to Sarajevo and featuring nearly one hundred images, many never seen before Sontag is the first book based on the writers restricted archives, and on access to many people who have never before spoken about her, including Annie Leibovitz. It is an indelible portrait of one of the twentieth centurys greatest thinkers, who lived

More Is More: Inside The Life And Work Of Susan Sontag
Over a half-century has passed since the publication of Susan Sontag's essay "Notes on 'Camp,'" but attendees of this year's Met Gala, which was inspired by that essay, seemed more confused than ever about what camp means. Camp used to be an insider taste among gay men, and the very exclusionary Sontag made herself famous by attempting to describe it. After she exploded this bomb, which helped to merge high culture with popular culture, Sontag returned to the high culture she loved as it began to disappear—for each woman kills the thing she loves.
Following her death in , Sontag entered into legend as a symbol of an insular American literary scene long since destroyed with her unwitting help. Several memoirs about her have been recently published, and her own disarming journals have begun to appear in print. As Benjamin Moser writes in his ample new authorized biography, Sontag: Her Life and Work, there is no criticism you can make about her writing that she did not make first and better. Moser, the author of a biography of Clarice Lispector that made her a literary star in English-speaking countries, spent many years researching Sontag and interviewing people who knew her. The page result is daunting.
