Judge Bunmi Awoniyi is the first Black presiding judge of the Sacramento County Superior Court.

Awoniyi, with roots in England as the eldest of five in a family of Nigerian immigrants, found her calling unexpectedly.
"I sort of just chose law," Awoniyi recalled. It was not due to family precedent or academic focus, but as one of the opportunities open to her, she said.
She described her first year as "informative, enlightening, exhilarating, and challenging," exceeding her initial expectations in many positive ways.
Her journey to justice in Northern California began through her selection for an international legal program, offering her a chance to represent her home country abroad.
Choosing America, Awoniyi's new frontier presented its unique challenges, not least being the lack of understanding around her legal qualifications.
However, her perseverance led to establishing a successful law practice in Sacramento’s Oak Park.
